Interior & Exterior Painting Tips for Vancouver Homeowners

Whether you're refreshing a single room or repainting the entire exterior of your home, painting is one of the most cost-effective ways to transform your living space. But Vancouver's unique climate — with its rain, humidity, and mild temperatures — creates specific challenges that homeowners need to plan for.

As professional painters serving Metro Vancouver for over 15 years, we're sharing our best tips to help you get a finish that looks great and lasts.

Interior Painting Tips

1. Prep Is Everything

The biggest mistake homeowners make is rushing into painting without proper preparation. A flawless finish starts with clean, smooth walls. Here's what proper prep looks like:

  • Fill all holes and cracks with lightweight spackle and sand smooth once dry
  • Clean walls thoroughly — kitchen walls especially collect grease that prevents paint adhesion
  • Sand glossy surfaces lightly to give the new paint something to grip
  • Remove outlet covers and switch plates — taping around them never looks professional
  • Use quality painter's tape on trim, ceiling edges, and anywhere you need a crisp line

2. Choose the Right Finish

Different rooms call for different sheens. In Vancouver's damp climate, this matters even more:

  • Flat/Matte: Best for ceilings and low-traffic areas. Hides imperfections but harder to clean.
  • Eggshell: Our go-to for living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms. Subtle sheen, easy to wipe down.
  • Satin: Ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and hallways. Moisture-resistant and durable.
  • Semi-Gloss: Perfect for trim, doors, and cabinets. Very wipeable and highlights architectural details.

3. Invest in Quality Paint

Cheap paint means more coats, less coverage, and a finish that fades faster. We recommend premium-grade paint (Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams, or equivalent) for every project. The extra cost per gallon pays for itself in fewer coats and better durability.

A good quality paint typically covers in one to two coats over a properly primed surface, while budget paint can take three or four — costing you more in time and material.

4. Don't Skip the Primer

Primer is essential when painting over dark colours, new drywall, patched areas, or stained surfaces. It ensures uniform colour and better adhesion. For most repaints over similar colours, a paint-and-primer-in-one product works well.

Exterior Painting Tips for Vancouver's Climate

5. Timing Is Critical in BC

Vancouver's rainy season makes timing your exterior paint job crucial. The best window for exterior painting in the Lower Mainland is:

  • May through September — when you're most likely to get several dry days in a row
  • Temperature above 10°C — paint needs warmth to cure properly
  • Low humidity days — check the forecast for at least 2-3 dry days after application
  • Avoid direct sun — paint in shade when possible to prevent lap marks and bubbling

6. Choose Weather-Resistant Exterior Paint

Vancouver's rain, UV exposure, and moisture demand a 100% acrylic latex exterior paint. These paints expand and contract with temperature changes and resist cracking, peeling, and mildew — all common problems in our climate.

For siding, we recommend satin or semi-gloss finishes that shed water and resist mould growth. For decks and fences, look for products specifically designed for horizontal wood surfaces with UV protection.

7. Pressure Wash Before You Paint

Exterior surfaces in Vancouver collect moss, mildew, dirt, and pollutants. Power washing is mandatory before any exterior paint job. We allow surfaces to dry completely (at least 48 hours in good weather) before applying paint.

8. Inspect and Repair First

Before painting the exterior, check for:

  • Rotting wood around windows, doors, and trim
  • Cracked or missing caulking around joints and seams
  • Peeling or bubbling paint that needs scraping
  • Loose siding or damaged fascia boards

Painting over damaged surfaces is a waste of money. Fix the substrate first, then paint for a result that lasts 8-10 years.

Colour Selection Tips

9. Test Before You Commit

Colours look very different under Vancouver's overcast skies than they do on a paint chip under store lighting. Always:

  • Buy sample pots and paint large swatches (at least 2 feet square) on your actual walls
  • View the colour at different times of day — morning, noon, and evening
  • Check how it looks on both sunny and cloudy days
  • Consider how the colour interacts with your flooring, furniture, and natural light

10. Work With Vancouver's Light

Vancouver's predominantly grey, diffused light affects how colours appear. Cool greys and blues can feel cold and flat under overcast skies. Instead, consider:

  • Warm neutrals (greige, warm white, soft taupe) to counterbalance grey skies
  • Rich accent colours (deep navy, forest green, warm terracotta) to add depth
  • Bright whites with warm undertones for trim and ceilings to keep spaces feeling open

When to Hire a Professional Painter

While small touch-ups and single accent walls are great DIY projects, consider hiring a professional for:

  • Exterior painting (safety, equipment, and weather timing)
  • High ceilings and stairwells
  • Whole-home repaints where consistency matters
  • Cabinets and trim (require spray application for a smooth finish)
  • New construction or renovation painting with tight timelines

Professional painters bring the right tools, techniques, and experience to deliver a flawless finish in a fraction of the time — and we clean up after ourselves too.
