One of the most common questions we get from Vancouver homeowners is: "How long will my flooring installation take?" Whether you're renovating a single room or redoing your entire home, understanding the timeline helps you plan around work, family schedules, and daily life.
At TelTac Contracting, we've completed thousands of flooring installations across Vancouver, Coquitlam, Surrey, and the Lower Mainland. Here's a realistic, step-by-step timeline of what to expect.
Step 1: Free Consultation & Estimate (Day 1)
Everything starts with a free in-home consultation. During this visit, we:
- Measure your space accurately
- Assess your existing subfloor condition
- Discuss your flooring preferences, lifestyle needs, and budget
- Show you product samples in your actual space and lighting
- Identify any potential challenges (transitions, stairs, subfloor issues)
This visit typically takes 30-60 minutes. You'll receive a detailed written estimate within 24-48 hours.
Step 2: Material Selection & Ordering (1-2 Weeks)
Once you've approved the estimate, the next step is finalizing your material selection. If you've already chosen your product during the consultation, we can order immediately. Otherwise, you're welcome to visit our showroom in Port Coquitlam to see additional options.
Most flooring materials are available within 1-2 weeks. Specialty products, custom orders, or products shipped from overseas may take 3-4 weeks. We'll give you a clear delivery timeline before ordering.
Step 3: Pre-Installation Preparation (1-3 Days Before)
Before installation day, there are a few things that need to happen:
- Acclimation: Many flooring products — especially engineered hardwood and laminate — need to acclimate to your home's temperature and humidity for 48-72 hours. We'll deliver the materials early and leave them in the installation area.
- Furniture removal: Clear the rooms being floored. We include basic furniture moving in our service, but we recommend removing small items, electronics, and breakables yourself.
- Old flooring removal: If included in your quote, we handle this on day one of the project. Removing carpet takes less time than removing tile or glued-down flooring.
Step 4: Installation Day(s)
This is where the transformation happens. Here's how long installation typically takes by flooring type:
| Flooring Type | Small Room (150 sq ft) | Main Floor (500 sq ft) | Whole Home (1,200+ sq ft) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vinyl Plank (LVP) | 0.5 – 1 day | 1 – 2 days | 2 – 4 days |
| Engineered Hardwood | 1 day | 1 – 2 days | 3 – 5 days |
| Laminate | 0.5 – 1 day | 1 – 2 days | 2 – 3 days |
| Tile & Stone | 1 – 2 days | 3 – 5 days | 5 – 10 days |
| Carpet | 0.5 day | 1 day | 1 – 2 days |
Note: Tile installation takes longer because it requires mortar setting time (24 hours) and grout curing time (24-48 hours) before the floor can be walked on. Glue-down engineered hardwood also requires cure time before heavy furniture can be placed.
Step 5: Finishing Touches (Same Day or Next Day)
After the main installation, we complete the finishing details:
- Install transition strips between different flooring types or rooms
- Reinstall or replace baseboards and quarter-round trim
- Install stair nosing if the project includes staircase work
- Caulk edges where flooring meets cabinets, tubs, or built-ins
- Complete a thorough cleanup of all dust and debris
Step 6: Final Walkthrough & Completion
We do a final walkthrough with you to inspect every detail of the installation. This is your chance to point out anything you'd like adjusted. We don't consider a job complete until you're 100% satisfied.
Factors That Can Affect Your Timeline
Several things can extend the timeline beyond the estimates above:
- Subfloor issues: If the subfloor needs significant leveling, moisture barrier installation, or crack repair, this can add 1-2 days to the project.
- Old flooring removal: Removing glued-down flooring or multiple layers of old flooring takes longer than removing carpet or floating floors.
- Complex layouts: Rooms with many angles, doorways, closets, and intricate patterns require more time for precise cutting and fitting.
- Staircase work: Adding hardwood or LVP to stairs is a detailed, time-intensive process that can add 1-2 days depending on the number of stairs.
- Material delays: Occasionally, products are backordered or delayed in shipping. We always confirm availability before scheduling your installation date.
- Weather (for deliveries): During Vancouver's snowfall events (rare but impactful), material deliveries can be delayed by a day or two.
How to Prepare for Your Installation
Here are our tips for a smooth installation experience:
- Clear the rooms: Remove small furniture, decor, electronics, and items from closets in the installation area.
- Plan for displaced rooms: If we're flooring your kitchen, plan meals ahead. If we're doing bedrooms, arrange temporary sleeping areas.
- Secure pets: Keep dogs, cats, and other pets in a separate area during installation. Open doors, power tools, and unfamiliar workers can be stressful for animals.
- Parking: Ensure our crew has access to parking near your home for material delivery and equipment.
- Communicate: Let us know about any concerns, timelines, or special requirements ahead of time. The more we know, the smoother the process.
