Carpet Installation in Vancouver: Costs, Types & What to Expect in 2026

Carpet has had a rough decade in Vancouver's design conversation — hard flooring has dominated new builds and renovations since the mid-2010s. But carpet is far from obsolete. In the right rooms and the right homes, it's quieter, warmer, softer underfoot, and often less expensive to install than comparable hard flooring. This guide covers everything you need to know about carpet installation in Metro Vancouver in 2026.

When Carpet Still Makes Sense in a Vancouver Home

The push toward hard flooring has been real, but carpet genuinely outperforms in specific situations:

  • Bedrooms: Carpet in a bedroom is warmer on bare feet, quieter for sleep, and still preferred by many buyers. It's also the easiest room to carpet without affecting adjacent flooring.
  • Basement recreation rooms: Over concrete slab, carpet with quality underlay provides warmth and sound absorption that hard flooring can't match without significant subfloor work.
  • Condos and multi-family: Many strata corporations require carpet in bedrooms to meet IIC sound transmission standards. See the section below on STC/IIC requirements.
  • Budget-conscious whole-home installs: For a full-home installation where hardwood or LVP isn't in the budget, quality carpet is a legitimate option that looks good and lasts 10–15 years with proper maintenance.
  • Stairs: Carpeted stairs are quieter and safer (better grip) than hard stair treads, particularly in homes with young children or elderly occupants.

Types of Carpet: What's Right for Your Space

Carpet TypeBest ForDurability
Cut pile (plush/saxony)Master bedrooms, formal roomsModerate — shows footprints and vacuum lines
Textured cut pileBedrooms, family rooms, stairsGood — hides wear patterns better than plush
Loop pile (Berber)Basements, offices, high-traffic areasHigh — doesn't crush under heavy use
Cut-loop (patterned)Family rooms, rec roomsGood — pattern hides wear and stains
Frieze (twist pile)Casual bedrooms, playroomsVery high — tightly twisted fibres resist matting

Fibre matters too: nylon is the most durable and stain-resistant, making it the best value for family homes. Polyester is softer and more affordable but less resilient under heavy traffic. Wool is premium, beautiful, and naturally soil-resistant — but expensive and not ideal in Vancouver's humid climate without proper moisture management.

2026 Carpet Installation Costs in Metro Vancouver

All prices below are per square foot installed, including standard underlay and basic furniture moving. Unusual subfloor conditions, removal of existing carpet/staples, or custom borders will add to the cost.

TierCost Per Sq Ft InstalledWhat You Get
Budget$4–$6Builder-grade polyester, basic 6lb underlay
Mid-range$6–$10Quality nylon or premium polyester, 8lb underlay
Premium$10–$18+High-twist nylon, SmartStrand, or wool; thick acoustic underlay

For a typical 1,000 sq ft carpet installation (three bedrooms and a hallway), expect $5,000–$9,000 at the mid-range tier including materials, underlay, installation, and removal of existing flooring.

Underlay: The Part Most Homeowners Overlook

The single biggest upgrade you can make to any carpet installation isn't the carpet itself — it's the underlay. Quality underlay determines how the carpet feels underfoot, how long it lasts, and how much sound it absorbs. A premium carpet on cheap underlay will feel flat and wear out faster than a mid-grade carpet on good underlay.

We recommend a minimum 8lb density underlay for bedrooms and a high-density acoustic underlay for basements and any room above another living space. The cost difference between standard and premium underlay is typically $0.50–$1.50 per sq ft — almost always worth it.

Carpet in Vancouver Condos: STC & IIC Requirements

If you're installing carpet in a condo or multi-family building, your strata corporation's bylaws likely specify minimum sound transmission ratings. The two relevant ratings are:

  • STC (Sound Transmission Class): Measures airborne sound (voices, TV). A higher STC means less airborne sound passes between floors.
  • IIC (Impact Insulation Class): Measures impact sound (footsteps, dropped objects). This is where carpet excels — carpet with quality underlay typically achieves an IIC of 60–75, well above the 50 minimum required by most strata bylaws.

Most strata corporations require carpet in bedrooms specifically because the IIC rating of hard flooring (typically 25–45 without special underlayment) falls well below requirements. If you want hard flooring in a condo bedroom, you'll need specialized acoustic underlayment and may still need strata board approval. We cover this in detail in our Vancouver condo flooring rules guide.

Vancouver-Specific Considerations: Moisture and Mould

BC's wet climate requires extra attention when installing carpet, particularly in below-grade spaces:

  • Never carpet a basement with active moisture issues. If your concrete slab shows any signs of moisture intrusion (efflorescence, musty smell, visible dampness), resolve the moisture problem before installing any floor covering — carpet included.
  • Use moisture-barrier underlay in basement applications. A closed-cell foam or rubber underlay with an integrated vapour barrier prevents ground moisture from wicking up through concrete into the carpet backing.
  • Avoid carpet in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and kitchens entirely. These are moisture-generating spaces where carpet will harbour mould regardless of how carefully it's installed.
  • Allow carpet to acclimate. Rolled carpet should be unrolled and allowed to sit in the room for 24–48 hours before installation, particularly if bringing it from a warehouse to a conditioned home in winter.

What to Ask Your Carpet Installer

Before signing a quote, confirm the following:

  • What density and weight is the underlay included in the quote?
  • Is removal and disposal of existing flooring included?
  • Who moves the furniture, and is it included?
  • How are seams handled — and where will they fall in my room?
  • Does the carpet have a manufacturer's warranty, and does the installation warranty cover it?
