Best Flooring for Rainy Vancouver Weather — Expert Picks

Let's be honest — Vancouver is wet. With over 160 rainy days per year, the flooring in your home needs to handle tracked-in moisture, humidity fluctuations, and the occasional forgotten umbrella dripping in the hallway. Not all flooring is created equal when it comes to handling our climate.

After 15+ years of installing floors across Metro Vancouver, here are our top picks — and the ones we'd avoid.

1. Vinyl Plank (LVP) — Our Top Pick

Best for: Entryways, kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and honestly — anywhere in your home.

Luxury vinyl plank is 100% waterproof. Not water-resistant — completely waterproof. You can spill a glass of water, leave it for hours, and the floor won't warp, swell, or stain. This makes it the ideal choice for Vancouver homes, especially in high-traffic areas where wet shoes and rain gear are a daily reality.

Modern LVP looks remarkably like real hardwood, comes in dozens of styles and colours, and is comfortable underfoot. It's also incredibly durable — most quality products have a 20+ year residential warranty.

2. Porcelain & Ceramic Tile — The Bulletproof Option

Best for: Bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, mudrooms, and entryways.

Tile is the ultimate moisture-proof flooring. It won't absorb water, doesn't warp, and lasts decades with minimal maintenance. Large-format porcelain tiles with a wood-look finish can give you the aesthetic of hardwood with zero moisture concerns.

The main trade-off is that tile is harder and colder underfoot, so it's not ideal for bedrooms or living rooms unless you install radiant heating underneath.

3. Engineered Hardwood — Beauty with Better Stability

Best for: Living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and hallways.

If you want the warmth and character of real wood, engineered hardwood is a much better choice than solid hardwood for Vancouver. Its layered construction makes it significantly more stable in humid conditions — it expands and contracts much less than solid wood.

That said, it's not waterproof. Keep it away from bathrooms and areas where standing water is likely. In entryways, use rugs and mats to catch the worst of the rain.

4. Laminate — Affordable but Use with Caution

Best for: Bedrooms, home offices, and low-moisture areas.

Laminate has come a long way, and some newer products have decent water-resistant cores. But traditional laminate is not waterproof — if water gets into the seams, the core can swell and the boards will warp. For Vancouver, we only recommend laminate in rooms where moisture isn't a concern, and always with a quality moisture barrier underneath.

What We'd Avoid

  • Solid hardwood in entryways or basements: It will expand, contract, cup, and potentially buckle with Vancouver's humidity swings.
  • Cheap laminate near exterior doors: One season of tracked-in rain and you'll see the damage.
  • Carpet in basements: Moisture can get trapped underneath, leading to mould and odour issues that are expensive to fix.

Tips for Protecting Your Floors in Vancouver

  • Quality entry mats: Use large, absorbent mats at every exterior door — both inside and outside.
  • Proper installation: Moisture barriers and proper underlayment are non-negotiable in Vancouver. This is something we include in every installation.
  • Humidity control: Consider a dehumidifier for basements and lower floors during the wettest months.
  • Quick cleanup: Wipe up standing water promptly, even on waterproof flooring, to prevent it from seeping into seams or under baseboards.

What TelTac Recommends

For most Vancouver homes, we recommend vinyl plank for the main living areas and high-traffic zones, with tile in bathrooms and laundry rooms. If you love the look of real wood, engineered hardwood in bedrooms and living rooms is a great choice — just keep it away from moisture-prone areas.
