Banister & Stair Railing Renovation Cost in Vancouver: 2026 Pricing Guide

Your staircase banister is one of the first things people touch when they walk into your home. It's also one of the most structurally important elements — a loose, wobbly, or outdated railing isn't just an eyesore, it's a safety issue. Whether you're updating a dated oak handrail, replacing wire balusters, or installing a full glass railing system, this guide covers what it actually costs in Metro Vancouver in 2026.

What Affects the Cost of a Banister Renovation?

Stair railing projects vary widely in price because they involve several independent choices. The key cost drivers are:

  • Material: Wood is the most affordable; glass is the most expensive. Cable and metal fall in between.
  • Linear footage: A short 12-step straight run costs far less than a sweeping two-storey curved staircase.
  • Scope: Are you replacing just the handrail? The balusters? The newel posts? Or the entire railing system from top to bottom?
  • Stringer and tread condition: If the underlying structure needs repair before the railing goes in, labour costs increase.
  • Number of trades: Glass railings typically require a glazier or specialty fabricator in addition to the finish carpenter — two trade visits instead of one.
  • Building permits: Metro Vancouver municipalities require permits for structural stair work. Permit fees typically run $100–$350 depending on the city.

2026 Cost Breakdown by Railing Type

The following ranges are for a typical residential staircase of 12–16 steps (approximately 10–14 linear feet of railing) in Metro Vancouver. Prices include materials and labour.

Railing TypeTypical Cost RangeNotes
Wood handrail replacement only$800–$1,800Existing balusters and posts retained
Wood railing system (full)$2,500–$5,500New handrail, balusters, newel posts
Metal/iron balusters with wood rail$3,000–$6,500Popular modern-traditional hybrid
Cable railing system$4,500–$9,000Stainless cable with metal or wood posts
Frameless glass railing$7,000–$18,000+Premium fabrication, requires glazier
Semi-framed glass railing$5,500–$12,000Glass panels with post framing

These ranges reflect typical Metro Vancouver pricing. Projects with curved staircases, custom millwork, or significant structural repairs will sit at the upper end or beyond.

Banister Only vs. Full Staircase Renovation: Which Should You Do?

This is the question we get most often. The honest answer: it depends on the condition of your treads and risers.

If your treads are solid, appropriately sized, and in good condition, a railing-only renovation makes complete sense. You can dramatically modernize the look of a staircase with new railings while keeping perfectly good treads.

If your treads are carpeted, dated, or worn — consider doing both at the same time. Replacing treads after a new railing is installed means working around finished work, which adds cost and risk of damage. Doing it in one mobilization saves money and labour.

See our full guide on combining glass railings with stair treads for more on sequencing the work.

Common Stair Railing Project Types in Vancouver Homes

  • Handrail replacement only: The most common request — a wobbly or dated handrail replaced with a new profile in oak, maple, or painted MDF. Fast, typically 1 day.
  • Baluster swap: Keeping the existing handrail and newel posts, replacing old square wood balusters with modern iron or metal spindles. Transforms the look for $1,500–$3,500.
  • Full railing system replacement: Everything from the bottom newel post to the top landing cap. The most comprehensive option — 2–4 days depending on scope.
  • Open railing to glass conversion: Removing a fully closed wall alongside a staircase and opening it up with a glass panel system. Often involves a structural assessment to confirm the wall isn't load-bearing.

BC Building Code Requirements for Stair Railings

Stair railings in BC must meet the BC Building Code (which follows the National Building Code with amendments). Key requirements:

  • Guards (railings on open sides of stairs) must be at least 900mm (35.4") high for residential applications where the adjacent floor is less than 1.8m below, and 1,070mm for higher drops.
  • Balusters must be spaced so a 100mm (4") sphere cannot pass through — this prevents child entrapment.
  • Handrails must be graspable — round profiles between 32–38mm in diameter or profiles with a graspable edge are required.
  • Newel posts at the bottom and top of stairs must be structurally anchored — not just surface-mounted.

We obtain all required permits and ensure every railing installation meets current BC code. This matters especially if you're renovating to sell — non-compliant railings are flagged in home inspections.
